It is more then likely that your OEM factory differential may have been designed primarily for regular city/highway driving. Most factory differentials are not designed for "sport" or "race" usage, therefore the design element caters more to basic function than performance application. On every car a basic differential is fitted to distribute the engine's power to the driving wheels, the basic differential gear supplies the power to the wheels which is loaded with the least resistance. This allows the car's wheels to run at different speeds in a turn with least resistance.
However, when a vehicle is cornering close to it's limit, the vehicle will exhibit body roll causing the vehicle to lean to one side, which will translate into the inside tire(s) losing forward traction and lateral grip. The wheels lift and cause excessive spin due to lack of downward force or weight distribution. This wheel spin is useless for acceleration until the tire(s) regain traction and start to gradually translate the power to the ground. A Limited Slip Differential (Limited Slip Differential) is needed to alleviate this wheel-spin.
With racing or performance driving, your vehicle may demand more then what a factory differential is capable of providing. More traction, stability, quicker reaction times and higher cornering speeds are key factors in which improve your vehicles characteristics on the track. A KAAZ after market Limited Slip Differential designed to cater around these needs will come handy and prove as a vital component on your vehicle.
Limited Slip Differential: An Limited Slip Differential is constructed slightly similar to the normal differential.
The pressure plate rings have the side gear, the pinion and the pinion gears locked inside and behind each pressure rings are a number of clutch plates. When torque is applied to the differential, the differential case will rotate and throw the pinion into the pressure ring cam. The pressure ring is then pushed out against the clutch plates thereby squeezing them together. This in turn causes the wheels to lock together, depending on the power applied. This effect limits wheel spin during hard cornering and applies power to the wheels evenly when more power is applied. On acceleration and deceleration, it provides even grip and on neutral power, it also free's up for less drag and easier turning.
Limited Slip Differential Configuration Types
KAAZ produces two configuration types commonly classified as 1.5 way or a 2 way. This designation reflects the design of the cam groove which enables the Limited Slip Differential to function differently under acceleration/deceleration loads. The 2 way is constructed in a way to have positive lock motion in both acceleration and deceleration mode, the 1.5 way functions similar to a 2 way under acceleration however provides less lock-up when decelerating. The 1.5 way may provide more forgiving balance depending on vehicle setup and driver skill when braking is compared to a 2 way setup. For Front Wheel Drive vehicles the 1.5 way is also very effective providing extra stability during braking.
Typically the 1.5 way differential is suitable for all types of motorsports driving. With optimized performance during acceleration it carries a lighter lockup on deceleration which is best suited for traditional road racers. Despite the fact that 1.5 way units have slighter lock up on deceleration, many users may still use this cam type for aggressive motorsports such like drifting or low gear auto crossing & gymkhana.
The 2 way is beneficial for high speed tracks and drifting. During R&D the more aggressive drivers preferred the 2 way over the 1.5 way L.S.D. due to better stability during high speed cornering. The 2 way L.S.D. provides great control during late-breaking scenarios where the vehicle is actually slowed down during the apex rather then traditional braking which is applied before entering or during the apex. For drifting the 2 way is most beneficial for shift locking and very aggressive transitions. The 2 way Limited Slip Differential is designed to keep the rear in sideways motion even during shifting. Most commonly users have preferred the 2 way L.S.D. over the 1.5 way for drifting.
