Now, let’s talk about the heart of this tech: the direct injection system that VAG rolled out in the early 2000s, known as FSI. This isn’t your granddad’s engine setup. Instead of the old-school multi-port injection that operated around 40-60 PSI, we’re talking about fuel being sprayed directly into the cylinders at a whopping 2,100 psi (that’s about 145 bar, for those keeping score). This setup not only boosts power but also cuts down on fuel consumption and emissions. It’s a game changer, especially in engines like the 2.5 TFSI.
The way this works is pretty slick. The engine has a variable low-pressure fuel pump that feeds a cam-driven, solenoid-fired high-pressure pump. This bad boy is responsible for cranking out the fuel to the injectors. There’s a three-lobe cam on the exhaust camshaft that drives the Hitachi Generation III high-pressure fuel pump. As you rev up, this pump can push out more fuel per minute, which is key for performance. The volume it can deliver is dictated by the stroke length from the cam lobe’s lift and the bore diameter of the pump’s internal pressurizing cylinder.
Now, here’s the kicker: APR’s High Pressure Fuel Pump upgrade isn’t just about cranking up the pressure. The main goal is to boost the volume of fuel available. Even if you’re running high power levels with APR’s Stage II+ ECU Upgrade and exhaust, the stock fueling system holds its own. But if you’re planning to go all-in with APR’s Stage III Turbocharger System, you’ll need to step up your fueling game. That’s where this pump comes in. It addresses those fueling demands and leaves you with plenty of room for future power upgrades.
By increasing the internal capacity of the pump, you’re ensuring that your fueling system can deliver a higher volume of fuel at every RPM, which is crucial for performance enthusiasts who want to push their engines to the max.
