Radium Engineering Walbro F90000274 E85 FCST 1 Surge Tank Pumps and 1 Lift Pump
Since 2010, Radium Engineering's external fuel surge tanks have been a game-changer for racers looking to eliminate fuel starvation during high-performance driving. Fast forward to 2013, and Radium Engineering launched the first-generation Fuel Cell Surge Tank (FCST), which quickly became the go-to choice for professional racing teams. It's all about simplifying plumbing and packaging while ensuring your vehicle stays fueled under pressure.
What is an FCST?
The Fuel Cell Surge Tank is designed to be a drop-in fuel pump system that fits seamlessly with Radium Engineering's popular fuel cells or any fuel cell that uses the standard 6x10 24-bolt fill plate bolt pattern. This innovative design protects EFI vehicles from fuel starvation, going beyond just being a fancy trap door box with baffles. It features a true dual-chamber fuel tank that incorporates a single lift pump and can accommodate up to three surge tank pumps, all neatly housed within the fuel cell. This setup offers the advantages of a traditional external fuel surge tank without the safety concerns and plumbing complexities.
Compatibility with Your Fuel Cell
If you're wondering whether the Radium Engineering FCST will fit your fuel cell, here are some key criteria to consider:
- The fuel cell must have the industry-standard 6"x10" 24-bolt flange opening.
- The opening should be on the top face of the fuel cell (not on a side face).
- The depth of the cell must be at least 7.7" (196mm) from the outer top face to the internal bottom face.
How It Works
The magic begins with a lift pump that draws fuel from the bottom of the fuel cell and pumps it into the 2L surge tank. Inside this surge tank canister, you can use up to three EFI fuel pumps to supply high-pressure fuel to your engine. If the lift pump runs low, the surge tank's volume ensures that the surge tank pumps continue to receive fuel, keeping your engine running smoothly. Plus, the return from the pressure regulator is routed back to the surge tank canister to help maintain its fuel level.
As shown in the design, there are three integrated fill valves at the bottom of the surge tank. These one-way FKM fill valves remain sealed unless the fuel cell's level rises above that of the surge tank. When that happens, each fill valve opens up, allowing 355LPH of fuel (totaling 1065LPH) into the surge tank until everything balances out. Any excess fuel simply flows back into the fuel cell, all while keeping everything safe and secure within the fuel cell.
Standard Fittings
- Pump Out -8AN Male: The external fuel pump outlet is marked with "PUMP OUT." It comes with 7/8"-14 threads, making it compatible with all 10AN ORB fittings. A standard 10AN ORB to 8AN male adapter fitting is included.
- Return -6AN Male: This external "RETURN" port is for low-pressure fuel coming back from the FPR. It features 3/4"-16 threads, compatible with all 8AN ORB fittings, and includes an 8AN ORB to 6AN male adapter fitting.
- Vent -8AN Male: The "VENT" port has 1-1/16"-12 threads, making it compatible with all 12AN ORB fittings. The FCST includes Dynamic Safety Vent (DSV) Valves that use a common 8AN male outlet fitting for standard fuel filling.
Selecting Your FCST
The different FCST part numbers correspond to the brand and number of fuel pumps. When choosing your pump configuration, make sure to select a combination that can adequately support your engine's output.
Features
Over the years, Radium Engineering has refined the FCST into a robust and highly functional piece of equipment. Here are some standout features:
- Merged single 10AN ORB female threaded outlet, with all pumps using check valves to prevent back-flow.
- One-way fill valves at the bottom of the canister that allow fuel in but not out, keeping the surge tank topped off.
- Multiple fuel pump options available, including gerotor, turbine, and brushless DC motor pumps.
- Hermetically sealed high-current stainless steel electrical studs for all pump types.
- Simplified servicing features, eliminating the need for nylon sealing washers and fuel cell retaining brackets.
- Constructed from full CNC aluminum with anodized surfacing for superior corrosion resistance.
- Compatible with a variety of fuels including leaded and unleaded gasoline, methanol, ethanol, and E85.
- Dynamic safety vent valve with rollover protection and fuel fill shut-off protection.
- Optional fuel surge tank level switch and diagnostic LED failsafe port.
