Since 2010, Radium Engineering has been a go-to name for racers looking to solve the pesky problem of fuel starvation. Fast forward to 2013, and they rolled out the first-generation Fuel Cell Surge Tank (FCST), which quickly became a favorite among professional racing teams. This innovative system simplifies plumbing and packaging while delivering top-notch performance.

What Exactly is a Fuel Cell Surge Tank (FCST)?

The Fuel Cell Surge Tank is designed as a drop-in fuel pump system for Radium Engineering's popular fuel cells or any cell that follows the industry standard 6x10 24-bolt fill plate pattern. If you’re driving an EFI vehicle that sometimes runs low on fuel, this system is your safety net. Unlike other solutions, the FCST isn’t just a fancy trap door box with baffles; it features a true dual-chamber design. With a single lift pump and up to three surge tank pumps all nestled inside, it provides all the benefits of a traditional external fuel surge tank without the usual safety concerns or plumbing headaches.

Is the FCST Compatible with My Fuel Cell?

Before you dive into installation, make sure your fuel cell meets these criteria:

• The cell must have the industry-standard 6"x10" 24-bolt flange opening.
• The opening should be on the top face of the fuel cell (not the side).
• The cell depth needs to be at least 7.7" (196mm) from the outer top face to the internal bottom face.

How Does It Work?

The magic happens when a lift pump scavenges fuel from the bottom of the fuel cell and pumps it into the 2L surge tank. Inside the surge tank canister, you can fit up to three EFI fuel pumps to deliver high-pressure fuel to your engine. If the lift pump runs low, don't worry—the surge tank has enough volume to keep the pumps fed and your engine running smoothly. Plus, the return from the pressure regulator goes back to the surge tank canister, helping maintain a full supply.

Designed with efficiency in mind, the surge tank features three integrated fill valves on the bottom. These one-way FKM fill valves remain sealed unless the fuel level in the cell exceeds that in the surge tank. When that happens, each fill valve springs into action, sending 355LPH of fuel (that’s 1065LPH total!) into the surge tank until everything balances out. Any excess fuel simply flows back into the fuel cell, all while keeping everything safely contained.

Standard Fittings

• Pump Out -8AN Male: This external fuel pump outlet port is marked as "PUMP OUT" and utilizes 7/8"-14 threads, making it compatible with all 10AN ORB fittings. The FCST includes a standard 10AN ORB to 8AN male adapter fitting.
• Return -6AN Male: The "RETURN" port is for low-pressure fuel coming back from the FPR. It features 3/4"-16 threads for compatibility with all 8AN ORB fittings and comes with an 8AN ORB to 6AN male adapter fitting.
• Vent -8AN Male: The "VENT" port is tapped with 1-1/16"-12 threads, working seamlessly with all 12AN ORB fittings. The FCST includes Dynamic Safety Vent (DSV) valves, which use a common 8AN male outlet fitting for standard fuel filling.
