Since 2010, Radium Engineering has been at the forefront of eliminating fuel starvation issues in racing with their external fuel surge tanks. Fast forward to 2013, and they introduced the Fuel Cell Surge Tank (FCST), a game-changer for competition vehicles. This innovative system quickly became the go-to choice for professional racing teams looking for reliability and performance.

What Exactly is a Fuel Cell Surge Tank (FCST)?

The FCST is a drop-in fuel pump system designed specifically for Radium Engineering's popular fuel cells, as well as any cell that features the standard 6x10 24-bolt fill plate bolt pattern. It’s crafted to protect EFI vehicles from fuel starvation, making it much more than just a fancy trap door box with baffles. This system boasts a true dual-chamber fuel tank that utilizes a single lift pump and can accommodate up to three surge tank pumps—all neatly packaged inside the fuel cell. It offers the advantages of a traditional external fuel surge tank without the added safety concerns and plumbing complexities.

Is the FCST Compatible with My Fuel Cell?

To ensure a seamless installation of the Radium Engineering FCST into your fuel cell, keep these criteria in mind:

• The cell must have the industry-standard 6"x10" 24-bolt flange opening.
• The opening should be located on the top face of the fuel cell (not on a side face).
• The cell depth must measure at least 7.7" (196mm) from the outer top face to the internal bottom face.

How Does It Work?

Here’s the magic: a lift pump draws fuel from the bottom of the fuel cell and pumps it into a 2-liter surge tank. Inside this surge tank canister, you can use up to three EFI fuel pumps to deliver high-pressure fuel to your engine. If the lift pump experiences any issues, the fuel volume in the surge tank ensures that the surge tank pumps remain supplied, keeping your engine running smoothly. Plus, the return from the pressure regulator is routed back to the surge tank canister to maintain its fullness.

The surge tank features three integrated fill valves at the bottom. These one-way FKM fill valves remain sealed until the fuel level in the cell rises above that in the surge tank. When that happens, each valve opens, allowing 355LPH of fuel (1065LPH total) to flow into the surge tank until everything balances out. Any excess fuel simply flows back into the fuel cell, all within the safe confines of the tank.

Standard Fittings

• Pump Out -8AN Male: The external fuel pump outlet is marked with "PUMP OUT" and features 7/8"-14 threads, compatible with all 10AN ORB fittings. A common 10AN ORB to 8AN male adapter fitting is included.
• Return -6AN Male: This port is for low-pressure fuel returning from the FPR, using 3/4"-16 threads compatible with all 8AN ORB fittings. An 8AN ORB to 6AN male adapter fitting comes standard.
• Vent -8AN Male: The vent port uses 1-1/16"-12 threads, working with all 12AN ORB fittings. The FCST includes Dynamic Safety Vent (DSV) Valves, which utilize a standard 8AN male outlet fitting for fuel filling.
